Misha Glenny

Journalist, award-winning writer and broadcaster and leading expert on cyber crime.

An award-winning writer, broadcaster and sought-after keynote speaker, Misha Glenny is an international expert on cyber security and organised crime. His personal encounters with hackers provide him with gravitas and exceptional insight into the minds of hackers and cyber-criminals. Misha has interviewed dozens of mafia bosses and members of organised crime groups. More recently, a new and separate network of criminal activity has emerged - cybercrime. He presents the issues surrounding cyber security in a relevant and fascinating socio-political context. A former BBC Central Europe correspondent who covered the revolutions in Eastern Europe, Misha won the Sony Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting (1993) for his work during the wars in the former Yugoslavia. During this time, he observed the growing relationship between organised crime and politics in the chaotic period that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 2012, he was awarded ‘The UK Information Security Investigative Journalist of the Year’, and he continues to be a regular contributor to major publications in Europe, the United States and Japan. His best-selling book, ‘McMafia’, about the globalisation of organised crime was broadcast at the start of 2018 as a major dramas series by the BBC and AMC.  Misha was Executive Producer and Script Consultant on McMafia, a huge achievement, considering the success of the show. ‘Nemesis: One Man and the Battle for Rio’, the biography of the man who ran the largest favela in Rio for five years as head of the cocaine cartel, is also in production as a Hollywood feature film. Like these two works, Misha’s book on cybercrime, DarkMarket: How Hackers Became the New Mafia, is based primarily on interviews with people activity engaged in criminal activity. Like all his books, it was shortlisted for several prizes. At present, Misha is developing and writing two television drama series, one focussing on crime and corruption in Rio de Janeiro, and the second, a political thriller about hackers. Misha studied Drama and German at the University of Bristol after which he attended the Charles University in Prague. He is a talented linguist and is fluent in German, Serbo-Croat, Czech and Portuguese. He served as a visiting professor at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute where he ran a course entitled Crime, Corruption and Economic Transition. He was voted the best lecturer at SIPA for his work there. Misha is on the international advisory boards of several major NGOs. He is regularly consulted by governments in Europe and the Americas on the Balkans and Eastern Europe, on trans-national organized crime and on cyber security. Misha has spoken at TED Global and is requested internationally to speak at corporate functions and events. A trained actor, his speeches are full of life, passion, experience and a dose of intelligent humour.
